What types of dental cleaning do you offer?
At Dominion Smiles, there are mainly three types of dental cleaning. First, if you come in regularly every three to six months, we do a routine cleaning. This may also be called a prophylaxis, and if you have gum disease, you may come in more frequently for periodontal maintenance.
The second type is therapeutic cleaning. This is for patients who have not had a cleaning in a long time but do not have a major infection. We may use a little numbing and clean in more detail. It takes a little more time but is still relatively quick.
The third type is deep cleaning. Deep cleaning is needed when you have not had a cleaning for a very long time, and there is a lot of buildup, along with gum and bone loss. We go in thoroughly to clean everything well and polish the teeth.
How often should you get a dental cleaning?
For patients with healthy gums and good oral hygiene habits, a dental cleaning every six months is often appropriate.
However, if you have a history of gum disease or extensive dental work, such as crowns, bridges, or implants, we may recommend more frequent visits.
In some cases, cleanings every three months can help us monitor your oral health and manage plaque and bacterial buildup before additional problems develop.
Is dental cleaning painful?
Dental cleanings are generally comfortable, and we take steps to make the experience as easy as possible.
In our office, we use gentle cleaning instruments, polishing techniques, and other comfort measures. For patients with sensitive or inflamed gums, we may also use topical numbing gels to reduce discomfort.
Sometimes patients experience sensitivity because their gums have been inflamed for a long time or because there's significant buildup around their teeth. We'll adjust our approach based on your needs to help keep you comfortable throughout the appointment.
How long does a routine dental cleaning take?
A routine dental cleaning typically takes about 45 minutes.
If you haven't had a cleaning in a long time or have significant plaque and tartar buildup, your appointment may take longer, sometimes one to two hours.
Additional time may be needed to help you feel comfortable, apply numbing medication when appropriate, or complete other necessary steps before and during your cleaning.
What happens during a dental cleaning?
During your dental cleaning, we may begin by applying a topical numbing gel if you have sensitive gums.
Next, we use specialized dental instruments to remove plaque, tartar, and other deposits from your teeth. We often begin with an ultrasonic cleaning device to remove larger areas of buildup, followed by hand instruments to carefully clean the remaining surfaces.
After removing the deposits, we'll polish your teeth, floss between them, and apply any additional preventive treatments or medications when necessary.
The goal is to leave your teeth clean while supporting the health of your gums.
Can dental cleaning damage your teeth?
Professional dental cleanings are designed to protect your teeth by removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria that contribute to cavities and gum disease.
When performed properly by a trained dental professional, routine cleanings generally don't damage healthy tooth enamel.
Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity afterward, particularly if they have exposed root surfaces or inflamed gums, but this doesn't necessarily mean the cleaning caused damage.
Why are your teeth sensitive after a dental cleaning?
There are several reasons you might experience sensitivity after a dental cleaning.
One common reason is gum inflammation. If your gums have been irritated for a long time, they may feel tender or sensitive after plaque and tartar are removed.
Tooth sensitivity can also occur when gum recession, bone loss, or tooth wear exposes areas that are more sensitive to temperature and touch.
Depending on the cause, we may recommend desensitizing toothpaste, appropriate rinses, or other treatments to help manage discomfort.
Our hygienist and dental team will explain what may be causing your sensitivity and recommend ways to keep you comfortable before, during, and after your appointment.
