What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding uses filling material that is put on your teeth to change the shape, color, and more for cosmetic reasons. Bonding is a very non-invasive way to change the look and improve the appearance of your teeth compared to traditional veneers.
What are the pros and cons of dental bonding?
The pros of dental bonding are that they are going to barely shave your teeth, and it can be done in one visit, relatively almost non-invasive, and can look really nice in one visit. The downside of dental bonding is that since it's a fancy piece of plastic, it doesn't last long. After a couple of years, it may have chipping, color change, or it tends to break down more easily, so it's not a long-term solution.
Will dental bonding match my tooth color?
Most of the time, dental bonding will match your tooth color very well because the dental bonding material has different colors and different tones, and we have all the shades of the bonding material to match your color.
But normally, we actually want to whiten your teeth a little bit because we want you to have whiter teeth. So we want to promote a little nicer bonding for the long term.
Can teeth with dental bonding still get cavities?
Once you get dental bonding, your teeth can still get cavities if you don't do good oral hygiene, like brushing and flossing. The bonding itself does not cause cavities, but the underlying tooth is still susceptible to certain diseases because it is untouched to start.
How does dental bonding compare to veneers?
Dental bonding, compared to dental veneers, is that it can be done in one visit, and a veneer normally needs to be done in two visits. Dental bonding can be done on any number of teeth. It can be one, can be six, can be more.
Since it blends with your teeth really well, there's no number restriction. But with veneers, we normally try to recommend that you do veneers in pairs because symmetrical placement, like two, four, or six, is very important. So sometimes if you only have one single tooth chipped, you suddenly feel like you have to do multiple teeth.
The other difference is that dental bonding is a quick, easy fix that can be done in one visit, but it doesn't last long. Veneers are made with a stronger material and can last many years to come, and are much more sturdy. So, dental veneers are more of a long-term solution.
What materials are used for dental bonding?
What we use for dental bonding is mostly dental composite. It comes with all kinds of shades and translucencies.
What is the dental bonding procedure?
Dental bonding procedure: first, we start with a good consultation and smile design to see where you need your teeth to be bonded, why you need them to be bonded, and how your bite is, meaning the opposing teeth. We want to make sure of the longevity of the bonding on the teeth.
Then, second, once you are happy with the design, we clean the teeth. We use a different tooth shampoo, and we condition it. We put the bonding on, use the high-strength purple light to harden it, polish, check your bite, and you're ready to go.
Does dental bonding hurt?
Dental bonding does not hurt. The reason is that we are not even touching your tooth. We just clean that area really well. Normally, you don't even need numbing of any kind. So it does not hurt.
Is there any recovery time after dental bonding?
Having your teeth bonded does not require any recovery time because it's not an invasive procedure. Basically, we do some cleaning and polishing. The gum may be slightly sore because we might go around the gum line to clean it thoroughly. But I will say you don't need any special recovery time.
Do bonded teeth need special care?
Yes, you do need to take special care of the bonded teeth, mainly because the bonding material is very advanced but still relatively weak. We don't want you to eat something really hard with that. It's good for cosmetic reasons, but it doesn't have the strength. So stay away from super hard food that may chip away at the bonding.
How long does dental bonding take?
Normally, bonding teeth depends on the size and the position of the teeth. Tooth color matching and the design may take a little longer. I would say design and shade matching is around 10 minutes. Bonding can range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes per tooth, depending on your personal situation.
How much does dental bonding cost?
Dental bonding cost depends on the size and the location. It can range from a few hundred, maybe the maximum is like $800 to $900 per tooth.
Is dental bonding covered by insurance?
Dental bonding is normally considered a cosmetic procedure. So most dental insurers will not cover it, but for some cases, your insurance may have some coverage. Then we'll discuss in person with your specific case.
When is a good time to consider dental bonding?
When you feel like you need improvement for your teeth, that will be a good time to talk about dental bonding.
