Dental X-rays in San Antonio, TX

Dr. Ruiwen Ma

What are dental X-rays used for?

Dental X-rays are used to determine whether cavities are present, how big they are, and where they are located. They also help us screen for gum disease, including bone loss. They can help us check the status of your jaw joint and, sometimes, your sinus location when we are planning for implants.

In general, we also use them to measure development in the jaw, and that helps with a lot of other things. Again, we also use X-rays to see if there is any abnormal growth in the bone.

What do you look for when looking at dental X-rays?

When we are looking at dental X-rays, we look at symmetry between the left and right sides, especially in larger full-mouth or full-face images. We are looking for sudden changes. We also look at differences in shading and contrast to help us see what is going on.

What can dental X-rays identify?

Dental X-rays can identify early- or late-stage cavities, gum disease, and the degree of gum disease. They can diagnose infections or abnormal growth in the bone, and they can also help determine joint health. They are also helpful when planning for implants.

What are the different types of dental X-rays?

There are a few different types of dental X-rays. One is called a bitewing, which is used to check for cavities.

Another is used to check the root of the tooth. There is also one that rotates around your head, which we call a panoramic X-ray.

In addition, there is a 3D image, sometimes called a bone scan. That is another type of X-ray.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays are very safe. The regular X-rays we normally take involve very low radiation exposure, about the same as eating two bananas or sitting outside for five minutes in the Texas sun.

A larger X-ray series is typically equal to sitting in the Texas sun for about 15 minutes.

Are dental X-rays expensive?

Dental X-rays are not very expensive. A lot of insurance plans cover dental X-rays. They also help us diagnose disease early so we can take care of it when it is easier and relatively less expensive to treat.
